National Real Sugar Day: Celebrating Real Sugar This October 15
Real sugar is rooted in nature and at the heart of real recipes, bringing sweetness from scratch. National Real Sugar Day unites our industry each October 15 to share our story and help consumers connect with the real sugar they know and love, made only from sugar cane and sugar beets.
Four Years of Celebrating Real Sugar
Founded in 2022 by the Sugar Association and its members, National Real Sugar Day honors our crop, process and farm families. It celebrates the people who make it possible and invites everyone to learn and experience something new with sugar in the foods they make and enjoy.
Each year, National Real Sugar Day has centered on a theme designed to build deeper connections between consumers and real sugar. The inaugural year in 2022 built industry awareness and reinforced the simple message that real sugar comes from sugar beets and sugar cane.
In 2023, the Real People. Real Plants. Real Sugar. theme celebrated just that; the people and plants behind the crop while expanding awareness of the day among industry, agriculture and community partners. The following year, Real Sugar: There’s Nothing Like It highlighted sugar’s unique qualities that make it irreplaceable, and invited sugar users to share their own experiences. In 2025, Real Sugar. Deep Roots. showcased real sugar as deeply rooted – in nature, family farms, local communities and family-favorite foods.
2026: Real Sugar. Real Food.
This year’s theme, Real Sugar. Real Food., brings the focus into the kitchen, connecting where sugar comes from with the scratch-cooking happening in homes and community bakeries and kitchens. It is a celebration of the people, recipes and foods that bring us together.
At the heart of the campaign is a friendly reminder that real sugar is made by plants, not in a lab. The goal is to build greater awareness and consumer confidence in sugar’s place in real foods, everyday meals, and family recipes. Real sugar is in your pantry and it’s often used to make foods from scratch.
Consumers are increasingly interested in simple, real ingredients over artificial or lab-made alternatives, and research reflects a preference for real sugar over sweeteners. Sugar Association polling conducted in April 2026 found that 82% of Americans prefer real sugar over artificial sweeteners.
National Real Sugar Day also provides an opportunity to help consumers better understand sugar’s role in the foods they enjoy. The day shares facts about sugar in our diets, including its long history as a trusted ingredient that has been safely consumed for more than 1,000 years.
Spotlight on the Real Sugar Seal
The National Real Sugar Day logo features the Real Sugar seal. Originally developed in 2020 by the Sugar Association as an easily identifiable way to differentiate real sugar from other sweeteners, the seal is now a registered trademark on sugar packaging.
Companies like Amalgamated Sugar, Michigan Sugar, U.S. Sugar, and American Crystal are already using the seal on their packaging, with more sugar companies expected to adopt it this year and beyond.

The journey begins in fields where sugar beets and sugar cane are grown and continues in kitchens where sugar becomes part of real food. Whether it’s a family recipe, a baked good made at a community bakery or a meal prepared from scratch, the ingredient carries with it a story that starts with agriculture.
